DRAGON Travels Into the Unknown with David Beckham

Last May, after a lifetime dominated by soccer and the associations that employed him, David Beckham retired. To celebrate his freedom, Beckham chose to visit Brazil for the first time unaccompanied by a team. Taking three of his closest friends—with an EPIC DRAGON and EPIC MYSTERIUM-X along to document the trip—he set off into the Amazon jungle in search of a place where nobody knew his name.

His twelve day excursion was shot on RED by Anthony Mandler, veteran director and Beckham's longtime friend, and Neil Harvey, DP.

Mandler shot Beckham's travelogue using a variety of handheld setups while pulling double duty as the group's guide. The lightweight EPIC DRAGON allowed Mandler to handle the camera with ease and grab shots of the highest quality. From the back of his motorcycle on Sao Palo's busy streets, to a leaky boat ride through the jungle, to some of the most isolated parts of the Amazon, the 6K RED DRAGON sensor captured every detail of Brazil's vibrant scenery.

Harvey, traveling with the production crew, shot the trip using an EPIC MYSTERIUM-X equipped with Cooke Panchro lenses. As Beckham's foursome traversed the countryside, Harvey's EPIC MYSTERIUM-X captured some of the documentary's many breathtaking shots. And despite Brazil's humidity, rain, and mud, the EPIC's rugged design kept the camera operational from start to finish.
